Top 10 of 2010

Top 10 of 2010

As you all know, 2010 was a huge year for me.  Living in New York City, volunteering at and watching my first 4 NYFW shows, and running my 1st half marathon were amazing experiences. Hopefully 2011 holds many more exciting opportunities.  Since it is the last day of the year, I give you (drum roll please) the obligatory end of the year fashion break-down: The Top 10 Trends of '10 (in no particular order).
  • Combat Boots
  • Military Jacket
  • Jeggings
  • Lace T-shirt
  • Denim-on-Denim
  • Cross body bags/pouches
  • Fake glasses
  • Rompers/jumpsuits
  • Oversized vintage(looking) sweaters
  • Leather Shorts
And don't forget the biggest fad of the year: SILLY BANDZ!
What was your favorite trend of the year and what styles did you just abhor?? I'd really like to know your opinions so feel free to leave a comment or two.  I'd really appreciate it!  Hope you had a great year!

New Year's Eve Sparkle and Shine

New Year's Eve

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas.  I definitely did and with my new camera I hope to improve the content of this blog and show you some more photos.  Unfortunately, I did not capture my Christmas outfit, but I plan to return to posting my looks very soon.  In the meantime I will tell you what I didn't get for Christmas, an outfit for New Year's Eve.  There is nothing like breaking out the sparkle for the season, and this Silence and Noise Lords Leaping dress from Urban Outfitter's 12 Days of Dresses does the trick.  I love that it features 2-way sequins that are black on one side and silver on the other.  You can change your look with a slide of your hand.  Add any of these accessories and you are ready to party in style.  So if you're not snowed in, head out to the mall and get your shine on!

Christmas Wishes

Christmas Wishes

I can't believe Christmas will be here so soon!  In honor of the holiday, I have arranged some of my favorite red and green gifts with some holiday sparkle.  These looks give you a chance to look sweet or tough with just a switch of shoes or accessories.  Of course I'm not implying that you should actually wear your red dress with green shoes or vice-versa, but a touch of either color in your Christmas ensemble would add to the holiday cheer.

Jeaneology

One thing I essential to my fall wardrobe is jeans.  I wear jeans practically everyday in the fall and winter months so it is important that I have a wide variety of styles to keep my look unique everyday.  I recently bought a pair of medium and a pair of dark rinse skinny jeans but my denim wardrobe for this fall will not be complete unless I get a pair of jeggings (honestly I kinda hate this word but it is so much faster to say than denim leggings), a pair of motocross skinnies, a pair of black skinnies, a pair of barely boot cut jeans, and a chambray or denim shirt.  I was a bit skeptical of the denim-on-denim trend but I have seen it pulled off very nicely and I intend to try it when the weather is right.  I love jeans so much and I will continue to wear my colored, tie-dyed, and wide leg trouser jeans this fall.  If I had unlimited funds for jean purchases I would buy these but since I don't, I think I might have a DIY project on my hands shortly.

100

I cannot believe that this is my 100th post! A little over a year ago I began writing this blog and I never thought anyone would read it. Although I can't say that I have even close to the number of hits some other blogs get or a huge amount of followers, I have learned that there is a select group of people interested in what I have to say about fashion, art, and travel and this gives me so much joy. I feel that I have grown as a blogger and as a fashion enthusiast and I have big plans that I hope to implement soon to improve the overall quality and content of the Mainstream Misfit. I plan to take my camera with me to restaurants, to post more music, to use better adjectives to describe collections (I think I killed the words, "amazing," "beautiful," "comfy," and "awesome"), and stage better photo shoots. I also have a special surprise in the works to commemorate the 1 year anniversary of Mainstream Misfit that occurred on June 6, 2010. I can't wait to show it to you when it's finished! For now I thought it would be a good idea to make a collage that exemplifies my personal style and leave you with a photo I took to commemorate National Rose Month. Just so you know, I appreciate any input you can give, so please, if you like (or dislike) anything I have on the blog or want me to blog about a particular thing just leave a comment (I honestly get so excited when people do)!

Running Free

Last night I was thinking about how much I love running and how I need to start running on a regular basis again if I ever want to look good in a bikini. Of course, since I am lazy and have absolutely no motivation even though it was only 70 degrees out and perfect running weather, I made a collage of the running gear I would like to own instead of actually hitting the trail. Obviously you should look up to me as the model of health and a passionate champion of fitness. Anyway, I have recently become obsessed with the Nike LunarGlide+ running shoes which I read about in Fitness Magazine. They come in so many cool colors and I am convinced that I don't need quite as much arch support as my trusty Brooks Adrenalines give me. These sneakers would be perfect for the stylish runner so I will try to buy myself a pair soon and maybe acquire a little motivation for some serious training. But other than those shoes, I find many of these products perfect for looking cute and staying comfy while you run your route or conquer the stair-master at the gym (though I'm not quite sold on the running skirt yet even if I did put a picture of one in this collage). Isn't that Tory Burch Duffle cute?! I'd love to have one of those too! But I digress, I plan to go running tomorrow morning so I'll let you know how it goes!

Gray Matter

In the summer, neutral colors can be just as important as the bright vibrant prints that we often wear. When I was flipping through a recent issue of LUCKY Magazine I came across a little piece about gray as a great summer neutral. Now, gray is actually one of my favorite colors to wear and you've seen how many times I've wore gray Ts, sweaters, accessories, jeans, skirts, shoes, jackets, and tank tops on the blog so you know that I had to post about it. But just because it's summer doesn't mean that you need to put your gray away. The many shades of this color make it a great alternative to other neutrals like brown, tan, white or black and it looks striking combined with practically any color. Here are some of my favorite gray pieces for summer.
